I'm gathering opinions/experiences with the "new concept" barefoot trim and if it can be successful for performance (dressage) horses. I've been reading and researching and am trying it on my thoroughbred as an alternative to traditional shoeing.

There definitely benefits to letting nature take its course with an unshod horse allowing the hoof to grow and maintain naturally. In most circumstances we are altering the animals natural behavior and environment by shutting them up in a 12x12 stall every day/night and limiting their pasture size and time spent in it. If you let the horse go unrestricted in acres and acres of pasture then it's probably a good idea. If your stressing the horse's feet with the rigors of performance and most likely keeping it in an unnatural routine then shoes may be the better way to go. Either way it's dependent upon your environment and application, each circumstance and horse for that matter is unique.
