New York City, NY - June 24, 2003 - The prestigious American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals-Maclay National Horsemanship Championship returns to New York City at the new Metropolitan National Horse Show. The Metropolitan National Horse Show will take place from October 29 to November 2, 2003 at Pier 94 and the Showpiers on the Hudson Complex in Manhattan. The Metropolitan National Horse Show is rated "AA" by the national federation.

"We are pleased to bring back the ASPCA-Maclay National Horsemanship Championship to New York City," said show manager Bob Bell. The ASPCA-Maclay Championship will be held on Sunday, November 2. The three judges named to officiate the 2003 ASPCA-Maclay Championship are Hap Hansen of Encinitas, CA, Matt Collins of Culpeper, VA, and Julie Winkel of Reno, NV.

At the age of 14, Hansen began training with legendary horseman Jimmy Williams at Flintridge Riding Club in CA. He has since amassed a distinguished record of representing the U.S. in international competition. In 1990, Hansen won the American Grandprix Association (AGA) Rider of the Year Award, and in 1994 was honored with the AHSA/Hertz Equestrian of the Year Award.

Popular judges Matt Collins and Julie Winkel have officiated at some of the largest shows in the country. Collins has judged at the National Horse Show, Washington International, Capital Challenge, Kentucky National, Wellington Classic, and Atlanta Summer Classic horse shows. Winkel lists Devon, the Pennsylvania National Horse Show, the Wellington Classic, and the Oaks Blenheim Fall Classic among her judging credits.

Regional Finals to qualify for the ASPCA-Maclay Championship include the Grand Fall Classic in Westbrook CT; Long Island Classic in Old Westbury, NY; Camden Fall Classic in Camden, SC; Kentucky National in Lexington, KY; St. Louis National Charity in St. Louis, MO; High Prairie Fall Classic in Parker, CO; North West Autumn Finals in Monroe, WA; and The Oaks Fall Classic in San Juan Capistrano, CA.

The ASPCA-Maclay Finals have long been the proving ground for future top international stars. Such notable equestrians as William Steinkraus, Frank Chapot, Conrad Homfeld, Leslie Howard, Peter Wylde, Ray Texel, and Nicole Shahinian-Simpson won the ASPCA-Maclay National Championship prior to going on to international equestrian success.

The site of the Metropolitan National Horse Show, Pier 94 and the Showpiers Complex, has played host to many top-class events including gift shows, entertainment extravaganzas, and as a location for major motion picture filming and fashion shows. Prize Lists will be available and tickets will go on sale to the public July 15, 2003.

After the Metropolitan National Horse Show takes place on October 29 to November 2 in NY, the National Horse Show Indoor Championships will be held at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, NV on November 19 to 23. The final show of the three events being organized in 2003 by the National Horse Show Association is the National Horse Show Outdoor Championships in Wellington, FL from November 26 to 30. Started in 1883, this is the 120th year for the National Horse Show Association.
