A little support needed...and words of wisdom. I am a training level rider, took lessons for 6 months, leased, and recently bought my first horse.I've had him 2 months now. I adore him, he is a 2nd level horse, very sweet and very forgiving. We are in full time training with a very good trainer who is great. When I first got him, I would ask for canter, and he always gave it to me. Over the last few weeks, he is giving it to me less and less, today not one time.... very disappointing, feeling quite frustrated, i'm getting him round, good energy, sitting trot, little half-halt and then outside leg back inside leg at the girth and a bump with both. Nothing, but a little faster trot...he gives the canter to my trainer beautifully every time. Anyone know what could be goiong on? He is an absoulute doll, so much learning in so many other areas, but were having a big problem on this one BASIC thing!!! HELP

Have you tried asking for a canter from a halt or a walk? Another suggestion would be when asking in a sitting trot, give a little half-halt, ask for the canter then give the reins away, let him be a little more relaxed. Once he responds then slowly gather him back. Sounds like he's just dull to your leg. Try letting him canter from different areas as well, when he least expects it. Also try cantering him when he's not in working mode, let him him have his head for awhile, let him enjoy it. If he is still sticky to the leg, try bringing a crop and a give a small, very small tap on the hind immediately after you ask with your leg if he doesn't respond.
