I'm planning on a long trip from Texas to Florida and will be trailering two horses together. I was wondering if there are any vets who would recommend how often to stop. I'm planning on stopping 4 times (morn, noon, evening, night) and checking the horses. Which means taking them out and walking them a bit. Since it's a long trip, I'm estimating about 18 hours at least, who knows with stops and breaks for us. Am I being to overbearing?

I have, on occasions used a guy who has a wonderful large trailer. He can haul 3 horses in a stall like setting or 5 slant load. I have only used him on rides that last no longer than 2 hours, but he trailers out of state quite often. He tells me that he does not stop too often, only for his needs (bathroom, gas, ect). He never takes the horses out. There is the likley hood of trouble with the horses if you do. Give them plenty of water and hay. But try to keep them in as long as possible. When you do stop, maybe untie them so they can stretch their head and neck down. It better for their breathing. Good luck to you.
